Practical Information

Access

The main access way to Ito campus is by public transportation. Here is the explanation separately from each place, from Fukuoka Airport to Hakata / Tenjin (the city center), from the city center to Ito campus, and from stations on the JR Chikuhi Line to the campus.

From Fukuoka Airport to Hakata / Tenjin

Train Station: Fukuoka Airport Station (Airport Line K13, at B2F of domestic passenger terminal)
Arrival Station: Hakata (K11) or Tenjin (K08)

Payment of public transportation fee
You can pay train fares with a ride ticket, a contactless credit card (VISA, Mastercard, JCB, AmericanExpress, DinersClub, Discover, 銀聯), and a prepaid IC card (we recommend Welcome Suica). When using a credit card, check ticket gates supporting credit payments. IC cards can be used for both trains and buses (JR, Nishitetsu Bus, and Showa Bus etc.).

Crucial Note: While contactless credit card payment is available on the Fukuoka City Subway, it is NOT supported on the JR Chikuhi Line (including Kyudai-Gakkentoshi Station). If you plan to take the subway all the way to the closest station to Ito campus, please buy a physical ticket or use an IC card when going through the subway ticket gate.

There are two ways to go to the campus from Hakata / Tenjin areas ; (1) taking the Nishitetsu bus (no transfer), and (2) taking the subway & Showa Bus. If you stay near Hakata or Tenjin station, taking the Nishitetsu bus is more convenient in terms of time, cost, and avoiding transfer.

From Hakata / Tenjin to Ito Campus

(1) Nishitetsu Bus

Bus Stop: “Hakata Station”(A) / “Tenjin Solaria Stage”(2)(2B) or “Tenjin-kita”(3: Futatamae) Bus Number: [K]
Arrival Stop: "School of Science”

You can pay bus fares with currency and an IC card. For payment with currency, take a numbered ticket from the dispenser when boarding the bus and pay when getting off. For payment with an IC card, touch your card when both getting in and off the bus.

(2) Subway & Showa Bus, with transfer

Train Station: the nearest station you stay
Arrival Station: Kyudai-Gakkentoshi Station (JK04, JR Chikuhi Line)

Use trains bound for Chikuzen-Maebaru or Nishi-Karatsu (do not use trains bound for Meinohama). Airport Line is connecting the JR line at Meinohama Station. By using a train to Chikuzen-Maebaru or Nishi-Karatsu, you can get to JR Kyudai-Gakkentoshii station directly.

For the information of transfer to the Showa Bus, please check the next section below.

Travel Information

Websites above would be useful for planning your trip.

Fukuoka offers a rich variety of cuisine, sights, and nature. Here are some of our top recommendations. You can easily explore these spots using the Fukuoka City Subway. The map provided by Fukuoka City Subway is also useful.

In following the list, brackets [] indicate the nearest station for each location.

Eating

  • Yatai (屋台 / Food Stands) — [Tenjin / Nakasu-Kawabata] Fukuoka’s iconic mobile food stands, "Yatai," offer a wide variety of unique local dishes. Popular specialties include Hakata Tonkotsu Ramen (pork-bone broth noodles), Oden (savory simmered ingredients), and Gyoza (dumplings).

  • Mizutaki (水炊き / Chicken Hot Pot) Mizutaki is a celebrated traditional hot pot dish featuring premium local chicken and seasonal vegetables simmered in a rich, flavorful broth. Its simplicity allows the high-quality ingredients to shine, offering a comforting culinary experience unique to Fukuoka.

  • Yakitori (焼き鳥 / Grilled Skewers) Yakitori is a popular charcoal-grilled dish. Fukuoka-style yakitori is unique because it includes not only chicken but also pork belly (butabara) and various vegetables. These skewers are delicious, authentic, and available at very reasonable prices at local izakayas and yatais.

Shopping

  • Tenjin Underground Shopping Mall (天神地下街) — [Tenjin] Popularly known as "Ten-chika," this mall serves as a 600-meter connector between Tenjin Station (Airport Line) and Tenjin-minami Station (Nanakuma Line). This elegant, European-style passage features approximately 150 shops.

  • Canal City Hakata (キャナルシティ博多) — [Kushida Shrine (Nanakuma Line)] A large, colorful shopping and entertainment complex. A signature feature is the artificial canal running through the center, where visitors can enjoy spectacular water fountain shows synchronized with music.

Sightseeing

  • Fukuoka Tower (福岡タワー) — [Nishijin] Standing 234 meters tall along the coast, this iconic tower offers a stunning panoramic view of Hakata Bay and the city from its observation deck. Access: A 20-min. walk from Nishijin Station, or a direct bus from Hakata Bus Terminal or Tenjin Bus Center.

  • Ohori Park (大濠公園) — [Ohori Park] Originally part of the outer moat of Fukuoka Castle, this expansive park features a massive central pond. A stroll around the water on a clear day is a perfect way to relax. The Fukuoka Art Museum is also located on the southeastern side of the park.
